Contains correspondence, 1927-1967, manuscripts of books and articles, 1930-1966, and book reviews, 1940-1964, that illuminate the professional life of a female historian in the twentieth century and the history of Virginia's Eastern Shore in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and during the Civil War. Correspondence includes letters from historians, journal and newspaper editors, students, male and female friends and associates, and Confederate veterans and their descendants. Manuscripts include Studies of the Virginia Eastern Shore in the Seventeenth Century (1940) and Court Records of Accomack and Northampton Counties (1954 and 1973). Reviews are of Ames' own books and her evaluations of other scholars' works.
